Counting sheep not working? Well I’m sure by now you’ve seen this new little sleep shot in your local drug stores and wonder, “can it really work?”. Sort of the opposite of the 5-hour-energy, and definitely not sold in bars, Dream water is a fast acting 2.5 oz, flavored sleep aid.
I have found with my nutrition clients that lack of sleep usually has more to do with stress management and inadequate nutrition which can be fixed with the right eating plan, stress-reduction techniques, and natural supplementation. However, there are certainly times when you need some help; a little nudge if you will. Though it won’t sing you a lullaby, this “gentle” brew of ingredients may provide the help you need in the short term.
Here’s what to look for in an over-the-counter sleep supplement and let’s see if it passes the test:
Safe, non addictive ingredients:
The main ingredients in this elixir are GABA, melatonin, and 5-HTP. GABA, is a brain chemical that has some calming effects; melatonin is a hormone that regulates the sleep cycle and also functions as an antioxidant in the body; and 5-HTP, made from the amino acid, tryptophan (think Thanksgiving Day after you eat turkey...zzzzzzz) and also used as an antidepressant since it helps to raise serotonin levels in the body. Though these ingredients have been tested safe, always consult your doctor if you’re on any medications, (especially blood sugar meds, pain meds, SSRI’s, or alcohol) so you’re aware of how these ingredients may affect you.
Low in calories/sugar and No Artificial sweeteners or Colors:
Dream water contains no calories or fat and no sugar. Those who know me are aware that I am always skeptical when I see a zero in the sugar column since it usually contains something artificial. In this case, I was pleasantly surprised to find it’s sweetened with all natural stevia.
A few of my nutrition clients have tried this and about 75% of them think it works, though some feel a bit groggy the next morning in which case I’d recommend not drinking it too late in the evening. I’ve also tried it for myself during a few plane rides and it does work in the short term, though I would be wary of using this product on a nightly basis to avoid dependency.
Snoozeberry, Lullaby Lemon, and Pineapple PM are their 3 flavors and all taste great! Kinda wants to make you keep guzzling, but please only one.
Overall, I believe it’s a pretty solid product for short term use only, (this is also stated on the company’s website) and used in conjunction with other safe and effective tools to help build a better sleep foundation in the body from the ground up.
Dangerous sleep medications are prescribed way too much in this country. My advice is to always talk to your doctor or health practitioner about any sleep problems, and find out what the root cause may be so you can begin support the body from the ground up. Here is more information on whole-food concentrates that may help activate the sleep cycle & nervous system and other body functions. And you can now sleep easy knowing Dream water's also got your back! Widely available at most drug stores.
